Hi, I'm Xander Freudenthaler, a Junior at Oregon State University studying Computer Science with a concentration in cybersecurity. I'm raising funds to pursue a transformative study abroad experience this fall, which gives me a chance to deepen my knowledge in ways that extend far beyond the classroom.
From late August through mid-December, I'll be studying at Rangjung Yeshe Institute in Kathmandu, Nepal, focusing on Tibetan Buddhism and the Tibetan language. I've chosen Tibetan over Nepali specifically for the opportunity to live with a Tibetan host family, immersing myself fully in both the language and culture.
I've always been fascinated by religious history and world politics, but this trip represents something deeper: the chance to integrate philosophy with my technical education. I believe that to truly excel in cybersecurity or any field, you need more than technical skills. You need philosophical grounding, ethical clarity, and an understanding of different worldviews. Studying Tibetan Buddhist philosophy will directly inform how I approach my career, particularly in navigating the ethical dimensions of cybersecurity work.
